Chapter Six

“These fajitas are delicious, baby.” Abigail commented.

“Thank you.” Julian replied.

The weather in New York was starting to cool down. Autumn was always Abigail’s favorite season and she vowed that when she had a daughter, she was going to name her so. The change in temperature also meant that her birthday was springing up. She used to look forward to her birthday but as she grew older, it just became another day. When she started dating Julian, she looked forward to her birthday. It would’ve been special.

Would’ve been. Her birthday fell during the 16-day sabbatical. And with the looks of the first night, Abigail wasn’t even looking forward to going to bed later on. The pair was uncomfortably quiet for much of the dinner and Julian’s eyes were firmly planted on his plate. He only looked up at Abigail if he had to, which wasn’t often. It used to be he couldn’t take his eyes off me now he can’t even stand the sight of me.

“Julian…” She began, hoping to diffuse the undeniable tension. “I’m sorry.”

Julian took a bite of his fajita and quickly swallowed it. “Forgiven.”

If there was one thing that Abigail couldn’t stand about Julian, it was his black-and-white way of thinking. It was either clear cut or not. It was either this way or that way. He went straight to the point, no bull. Now he wasn’t offering her an explanation of how he felt or why she was wrong. Instead, he made it short and not-so sweet.

She wanted to go on and explain her true feelings for him and their relationship. She wanted to finally admit that yes, she was in love with him. But whether Julian wanted to hear any of that, or even parts of it, was unclear. She pissed him off and it bothered her but she knew he would get over it.

He was heartbroken and that killed her. There was no telling when his heart would heal. “What’s for dessert?” She offered.

“Oh no, not yet,” he shook his head.

“What?” Abigail asked.

Julian glanced at his watch. “It’s not your birthday yet, Gayla. You still have an hour left,” he smiled.

Abigail smiled. She wasn’t sure if Julian truly forgave her or if he was trying to make nice of what happened earlier. But whatever the case, his demeanor helped lighten the mood. “I’m almost done with dinner, Julian. I like to have my dessert now.”

Julian studied Abigail’s plate. She had a plate full of shrimp, chicken, and beef slices mixed in with a variety of vegetables. “You’re almost done with nothing. It’s okay to eat, Gayla.”

“If I take a few more bites, will you please give me my damn dessert?” She asked.

Julian feigned shock and put a hand in front of his mouth. “Oh my!”

Abigail giggled. “Okay, okay. I’ll have a little bit more but after that, I’m done!”

Julian smiled at her. “Thank you.”

Abigail finished the last of her fajitas. To both her and Julian’s amazement, she ate all of it. “There! See? See?” She pointed to her empty plate.
